THE BEST COFFEE SUBSTITUTE - REVIEW
The market for coffee and caffeine substitutes is growing. The reasons for switching your favorite cup of "Joe" to something well .... different - are numerous. Whether it is for health reasons, religious (see Mormons), moderating your coffee and caffeine intake or just trying something "Joe", the alternatives are plenty and some are even delicious :-)
And so, we thought why not try to put a list together of the best coffee and caffeine alternatives.
The first question we asked ourselves was "what does it take to make a really good coffee substitute?"
We came up with six leading answers everyone in our 'circle of wisdom' seemed to have shared.
1) It needs to taste delicious like coffee.
2) Energizing like coffee.
3) No negative side effects as coffee.
4) Ideally, it should have health benefits.
5) Available and easy to prepare.
6) A drink you will want to share with a friend over a carrot cake (we love coffee with carrot cake).
Very early into the "testing / tasting" we realized that a lot of the companies in this business identify coffee alternatives in perhaps a more literal sense of the word, meaning "Coffee Alternative - an alternative to anything of a resemblance to the coffee beverage".
This does not mean to say that the majority of coffee substitutes we tested tasted bad (they did:-), only that the did not resemble what you and I might call "coffee".
Yes, they were almost all healthy and did NOT "offer" the same excellent side effects that some people experience after drinking coffee (hmmm flatulences, acid re-flux and extracurricular bowel activity to mention just a few). In fact, some beverages were even surprisingly energizing, others relaxing!
And so a list of the real coffee alternatives became more like 'other beverages one might drink to moderate their coffee and caffeine intake'. Perhaps this is exactly what coffee alternative producers mean by the term "Coffee Alternatives"!
"COFFEE DATE" - DATE SEED COFFEE
Coffee made from the seeds of the date palm (also known as "date seed coffee" / "date pits coffee" / "date stone coffee" / "date beans coffee") is an excellent coffee substitute and an alternative to caffeine. It is one of the very few alternatives to coffee which actually tastes like coffee and gives you an immediate energy boost. Furthermore, it is not addictive and will not give the infamous coffee "jitters". Dates coffee is truly gluten-free and non-acidic, so it is perfect if you suffer from acid re-flux after drinking your regular coffee. Date seed is naturally caffeine-free (no processing or chemical residues). It is also a great way to start kicking out your caffeine addiction.
In a trial performed on arterial cells in culture, as well as in atherosclerotic mice, the team of researchers. Results further showed that date seed extract by itself significantly decreased the LDL-associated aldehyde (TBARS) levels by up to 83%. Similarly, LDL-associated lipid peroxide levels were decreased by 99%! Did you know that the total polyphenol concentration is 10 times higher in the date seed than in the date fruit. Each cup of date seed coffee contains about 7 date seeds!
It is pretty obvious than why date seed coffee is our favorite coffee substitute, which is why we also created it in the first place :-)
Postum is a powdered roasted-grain beverage once popular as a coffee substitute. That’s right, the warm, classic that’s been part of families for more than 100 years is back, apparently with its original recipe. It still has that smooth, toasted flavor.
